I typically like female musicians much more than male musicians. I’m not sure why. I guess I like music mostly for it’s beauty and obviously women are typically better at displaying that aspect of it. There are of course exceptions, Grizzly Bear, Alexi Murdoch, Bon Iver…all lovely voices and melody creators. My most recent vocal infatuation is Lia Ices. Good gracious, her new album is so enchanting. I wholeheartedly recommend buying it. Every song is uniquely arranged showcasing her goddess-like voice and etherial melodies. I could gush on and on. Listen to it and you will understand!

Here’s my drawing for today. Guess what I was listening to while drawing this?

  2. awesome drawing! one of my favorites of the year.

It's funny you mention the male / female musician thing> i was just talking to Tommy about it yesterday. I hardly listen to male soloists. I either listen to bands (mostly w/ male lead singers), or female soloists. But male soloists are a RARITY by far. I can't think of much music more boring, for my tastes. haha.

So, my exceptions: Dan Auerbach, Julian Casablancas, Stevie Wonder, Otis Redding, a couple others and my friends. But none of these famous folk are in the singer/songwriter tradition.

Females, on the other hand, are the treasure trove of excellent solo music. Carol King, Eva Cassidy, Mavis Staples, Duffy (well, that first album), Joni Mitchell, Lauryn Hill, Feist, Alison Krauss, you, Liddy, Gemma Hayes.. the list goes on and on.

  3. thanks for the input bruce! sounds like we are opposite. i love male soloists (james taylor, jackson brown, damien jurado, lyle lovett, etc.) it's more of a rarity that i get into a male fronted "band." but with lady singers, it doesn't usually matter. i think it's more common to find a female soloist than a male…do women not work as well in band contexts? i feel like there's so much more you could study into this!

  4. yea, definitely chewing on these ideas now. I wonder how guys and girls compare generally as listeners.
