I spent 5 days in the Bay area last week and I want to share some of the inspiring things I saw. Starting out, here is a bunch of signage and little bits of design that stood out to me. It was really inspiring to see a lot of hand done work. A lot of places we went out to eat would have hand-written signs or store hours hand painted on the front door. It was refreshing and encouraging to see that it’s not always expensive or difficult to have well done, unique signage.

Here are some of my very favorites. More posts to come later this week on lighting, spaces and good food!

This was a neat little cafe we went a couple of times in Oakland. They had amazing art (I will post some of that later).

This was a really neat surf shop we went to in San Francisco near the beach. I loved the sign out front and the tshirts and poster they were selling.

  1. It’s so NICE to see someone with great design skills share their perspective of such a design friendly town. I think you should be hired by the Travel Channel on the sole basis of bringing city design to the forefront. I’d watch it religiously. What city is next ? 🙂

  2. Wow…that’s pretty flattering! I had never thought of it as a possible career. But traveling around eating good food, drinking coffee and taking photos of signs wouldn’t be a bad life.

I’m thinking about actually doing one on spokane! Good signage is few and far between here…but there are some gems.

  3. That last one reminds me of your style, quite a bit. It looks like your trip was food for the soul of an artist. I love seeing places that just feed us creativity. We so need it.
