Arts Organizing has been a passion of mine for over 15 years. I love bringing creative people together to build connections and benefit the community.
I also truly love collaboration and seeing the type of work that comes from connecting different art mediums. Organizing is rooted in my love for people and art.
I love the design community where I live in Spokane. It’s rich, diverse and super talented. I also love the connection of music and design, so I’ve organized 4 massive poster art shows in conjunction with local music festivals.
The first two were for Bartfest, a small two venue festival we hosted at The Bartlett. And the second two were for The Inlander’s Volume Festival. Each designer was assigned a band and a color palette and sales of the posters were donated to Songs For Kids Foundation.
I started Collect as a design blog. I was watching my hometown grow and explore a new era of arts culture. But I saw a deep disconnect between what was going on locally and how I saw the modern world operate. Creating lasting content that lives online is important for artists to establish their careers. At the time, most local bands weren’t recording or making videos, artists didn’t have websites or instagram pages. And local news outlets were not covering what was going on in the art community.
Collect was born and quickly morphed into an all encompassing way to get shit online that was happening in the scene. Any idea I had, I went for it. I did acoustic live videos (Collect Sessions) of musicians in collaboration with the Spokane Film Project and This Had Better Be Good Films. I organized secret house shows (Collect Secret Shows) where I would have a photographer and videographer document the event. I did artist and designer features. We reviewed records. I went and wrote up art events and promoted things I thought were cool.
I’m not currently keeping the site up but I still am in love with the ethos. To build awareness, camaraderie and home town love. To help the community believe that it IS about and FOR the arts.
Land of Plenty was a group art show and two night concert featuring only women identifying designers, photographers and musicians. Each photographer and designer were paired with a musician and provided with a song. The Photographer was provided with a song as inspiration then kicked back to the designer who added a lyrical element to the piece. The gallery show was paired with two nights of music performed by the featured musicians.
